The virtual mold library project was born in 2018 from a partnership between the DM-lab, the Environmental Design Laboratory of ENSAD Nancy developed by Alexandre Brugnoni and Patrick Beaucé, and the CDPV, the Basketwork Development and Promotion Committee, located in Fayl-Billot.
The virtual mould library aims to show the interest of basketry on mould for creation and to encourage new collaborations between designers and basket makers.
The 3D printed mold provides a concrete form for the basket maker to follow. As such, it constitutes both a material support allowing the accuracy of the expected result and a communication tool between the designer and the basket maker (it is not necessary to know how to read a complex plan, no misunderstanding between the languages of each other). The virtual mold library shows traditional molds and designer projects, as many demonstrators of the creative interest of mold-based basketry. Each project is presented with its mold and the piece of basketwork.
This platform allows the consultation :
- Photographs and various documents concerning moulds and basketry work
- Instruction manuals for the design of moulds compatible with basketry skills
- Information on the different weavings, tools and basketry techniques
This platform also allows the download of:
- 3D modeling of traditional molds
- Digital files in STL for 3D printing of traditional molds
- 3D modeling of new molds from the projects section
- Coming soon, the digital STL files of the molds from the project section
- Instructions for use of the molds and notices necessary for the realization of the basketry pieces
